Advantages: beautiful waterfront areas
Disadvantages: Spring Breaker's ?
Fort Lauderdale is, quite rightly, known as the Venice of America. The town is on the east coast of Florida and built around many hundreds of canals and waterways Naturally, one of the best ways to take in the sights is by boat. We chose to go on the Paddlewheel Queen and I can highly recommend this trip which lasted about 2-3 hours. The cruise passes many outstanding and very expensive waterfront houses including an area known as multi-millionaire’s row! There is a tour guide who gives information about many of the inhabitants and history of the area. You can also choose to disembark at a Seminole Indian village (I personally was not keen on this and felt like I was intruding on their community). Most of the hotels are situated opposite the seven mile stretch of beach and there are certainly plenty to choose from. The beaches here are nice although not quite as appealing as the west coast beaches of Florida. If you are a water lover you may want to visit Ocean World – a kind of mini Sea World. The area is of course also overflowing with every kind of watersport you can imagine, and is famous for swimming. The International Swimming Hall of Fame (just across from the beach) is host to swimming memorabilia from the whole nation. Be warned though that from March to late April the area is full of Spring Breaker’s ( college students who descend on the place en masse from all over the USA)and the place does tend to get rather lively
