Fort Meyers ... census. According to the 2005 U.S. Census Bureau's Estimates, the city had a population of 58,428. On August 13, 2004, Fort Myers was hit hard by Hurricane Charley, a Category 4 hurricane that made landfall north of the area. In 2005, Hurricane Wilma struck south of Naples, but caused extensive damage nonetheless in Fort Myers and its southern suburbs.

As an Englishman I would like to explain why I have come to love South West Florida. I stayed overnight once in 1980. I came back again eighteen years later looking for somewhere to take extended vacations and possibly eventually to retire. I think I have found that spot in Naples. The town originates from the late 1800s. It is in the corner of Florida where the Tamiami trail (US19 from Tampa to Miami turns from the South to the East). It is a clean, well maintained place that has a plethora of subtropical plants and trees with little urban sprawl. Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach (not to be confused) are two of the best-kept secrets in Florida. Fort Myers is a lovely town with lots to do, including a visit to Henry Ford and Thomas Edison's summer houses (they both spent their summers here) as well as walking around the palm-fringed avenues. Fort Myers Beach, however, is where the action is: it has gots lots of bars, restaurants and shops next to the sandy white beach. Not far from Sanibel (an upscale Floridian beach resort) it shares its beautiful surroundings but is more affordable and suitable for families.
