For the full Frankenmuth experience you need to stop into Zehnders for the all you can eat chicken dinners, served with steins of American beer. The stores in town sell mostly Christmas decorations, but like all tourist destinations I have visited in Michigan, there is plenty of fudge available. Santa Claus just won’t leave this town in mid Michigan. Perched just off I-75 Frankenmuth bills itself as ‘Little Bavaria’, and many of the buildings are constructed to look like old style German homes and stores. Driving into the town you slowly become aware that you are exiting reality and entering a very strange, festive, Germanic twilight zone. During the holiday season, only the European flavour may seem odd, but to enjoy the utterly American craziness of Frankenmuth you need to visit in the summertime.
