Frankfurt has about 650.000 inhabitants and is the fifth biggest city of Germany. You probably arrive at the airport which is the second largest –behind Heathrow- of Europe. Many people say that the city of Frankfurt is somewhere in the suburbs of the airport. Enough said? Maybe, nevertheless I will continue.

From the airport, trains (S8 and S9, direction Offenbach or Hanau) take you in about 15 minutes to the city of Frankfurt. Get out at Hauptwache and you are in the very city centre. Around this kind of square (completely messed up in the Sixties) you find any kind of stores. Next to the huge Kaufhof-store Les Facettes is situated, an interesting mall with more than 100 shops. On top of it, you have a good view over Frankfurt downtown. Also the IMAX cinema is on top of that building. Some films are shown in English.

Best view over Frankfurt and around you have from the Main Tower –one of the highest buildings, completely covered by blue glass. Entry is in Neue Mainzer Strasse.

Take a walk at the River Main which is one of the nicest places in Frankfurt. Between bridges Untermainbrücke and Holbeinsteg the Northern riverside is called Nizza (German for the city Nice) and Mediterranian plants like palms and even an olive tree can be seen there.

Right there the Jewish Museum (Jüdisches Museum) is situated which offers a good view into daily life of Jews in Frankfurt in the past time.

Pass the river over pedestrian bridge Holbeinsteg and you are in front of the art museum Staedel. A good collection of old masters, impressionists and expressionists is shown there. Especially plenty paintings of Max Beckmann can be seen there.

Around the Staedel there a about a dozen of other museums, all at the board of the river. Liebieg House for instance offers statues and plastics from the past 2.500 years.

Follow the river in Eastern direction, enjoy the skyline, take the other pedestrian bridge Eiserner S
teg back to the other side and you are in the historical part of Frankfurt. Have a look onto the city hall Römer and have a visit of the Cathedral where most German kings were crowned in former times.

Go a bit further eastwards up to the next big crossing. You see a building with a wave like roof. Inside of it the Museum Judengasse (Jewish lane) is situated. It gives you an excellent view into the Jewish ghetto up to 200 years ago and Jewish liberation during 19th century.

Southwards go over the Alte Brücke (old bridge) into the district of Sachsenhausen and taste the sour apple wine (Apfelwein) and the delicious local meal Gruene Sosse (Green sauce made out of 7 different herbs) served with potatoes and eggs in one of the countless pubs there. You will enjoy it.

What, you missed your plane? You wanted to stay a few hours only instead waiting at the airport for your connection flight? And I am guilty now because of my tiny opinion here? Well, then stay another day!
