Advantages: exhibition
Disadvantages: nothing much to see
As per my previous op, we were off to Frankfurt for holiday. We reached Stansted airport and checked in. Whilst the checking, my wife decided to take my son and her sister to shop around. Unexpectedly, the lady behind the desk demanded to see everyone who was travelling. So I asked my brother to get my wife and the rest. Then she demanded to see according to the passport she was holding. When it came to my son I just carried him up and showed him to her and she just laughed. Everything was cool. I guess all this fuss was due to what happened in Newyork. We were given the gate number. So we decided to head off towards that direction. Got there and saw some duty free shops. My wife just loves shopping. Women never get tired of shopping. I had to buy her a small hair dryer and some earrings. No really I love her very much. We had selected to go by Lufthansa Airlines. It was time to go into the aircraft. A warm welcome from the crew. My son loves going in aeroplanes. He made sure that he sat next to the window to watch the plane take off. One of the crewmembers came and gave my son an activity bag. This made him very happy. Within no time, we were in Frankfurt. It was pouring rain. Oh no I said to myself. I felt as if I was in still in UK. Whilst coming out, one of the officers who checked our passport was really tough. He asked me so many questions and not even a smile on his face. It doesn't cost money to smile you know. This gave me the impression that I am not going to enjoy my trip. Anyway, we took a cab to the hotel that we were booked in. It took us another half an hour to get to the hotel - Holiday Inn. We checked in and decided to get fresh. There were some restaurants and food shops to eat. After having lunch, we were ready to go and discover Frankfurt. But no, the hotel Manager told us that as it i
s Saturday, all the shops close at 4.00 pm. It was already 3.30 pm. Oh damn! Not only that, the shops are closed on Sundays and on Monday they don't open until 10:00 am. And by that time we will be gone back to London. Great! There was not much we could do apart from arranging for a city tour. Everyone was very disappointed. Off we went to our City tour. Saw a few buildings and Cathedral Church. Apart from this church, I didn't find Frankfurt much interesting. There was this Pencil building which was ok. As Frankfurt being a city I expected a lot I guess. Whilst touring, the guide told us about The Automobile Exhibition that was on in Frankfurt. Excellent! I thought to myself. We came back to the hotel in the evening. Everybody was really tired. We were just about to lie down and suddenly I asked my wife where she had put her handbag. She just looked stunned at me and said 'I don't know'. I couldn't believe it. All of us started looking around for the handbag but no sign of it. I dashed to the reception and asked the receptionist to call the Tour Operators. Get them to look in the bus we went in for city touring. They said nothing was found. Oh no! What are we going to do? My wife had £200.00 cash in her purse plus all her credit cards. As if that was not enough, she had her sister's purse in her handbag. She had about £100.00 cash. Oh God! What a disaster! My wife was nervous and was about to cry. I comforted her and we started calling all the credit card providers and cancel them. Luckily I had some German money and my Switch card. We had given up on the handbag and money. All of us were down. None of us felt like doing anything. We didn't have much to eat. Next morning, we still decided to go to the Automobile Exhibition. Bought the tickets and in we were. The hall was huge. There were all sorts of cars and motorbikes.
So many countries had taken part in this exhibition. I saw so many BMW and Ferrari cars. If only I was millionaire, I would have bought one of those flashy cars. There were so many types of wheels on display. It was just fantastic. I saw the new Mini. It looked very spacious and better than the old model. Overall I really enjoyed the show. I bought my son a small model of Ferrari car and an original cap. By the time we came out, it was already 4:30 pm. Our stomach was rumbling, but I didn't have enough money to buy the food. So we started searching for a cash machine where I could cash my money using Switch card. We found one but the bloody cash machine was inside the bank and obviously the bank was closed. I tried to open the door by swiping my switch card but unfortunately it did not open the door. Luckily there was this man who seemed to be local, he used his card to open the bank door. If it weren’t for him, we wouldn't have been able to eat. In the evening, we were just relaxing and suddenly our phone rang. It was the receptionist. Somebody had found my wife's handbag and they are coming to return it to the hotel. What a miracle! I was called to come and get the handbag. In my mind, I was thinking of what to give (money) that person as a thank you. When I went there to get the handbag, that person who had found the person had already left. I was really shocked. Wow! so there are people out there. I went back to my room and my wife and I checked for the purses. Each and every penny was there including the credit cards. Not only that, my wife's hairbrush was there. That person was like god to us. On Monday, it was time to go back to London. I just couldn't wait. Paid for the hotel and off we went to the Airport. Checked in and we were on our way back. In an hour's time, I the pilot announcing ' ladies and gentlemen, please fasten you se
at belts as we are about to land in Standsted airport'. Yes London! To be honest with you, this trip was a disaster apart from the exhibition.

- 05/10/01 Frankfurt sounds much like London's City area, hardly anything is open at the weekends, complete contrast to places like Oxford St et al. Perhaps it would make a better impression if you went midweek? Chinny |
