Advantages: Friendly, Relaxed
Disadvantages: Distance
When you book your holiday to Australia you may well consider staying in Perth to see some of the West Coast of Oz. What about Fremantle? Well most of you will have never heard of it, I wouldn't have if I didn't have family there. Well put it down under on the places you should stay! Fremantle is very close to Perth, only about 25 minutes on the train. It is a little port town that has a really relaxed atmosphere. Nowhere else have I found cars stop to let you cross the road without the order from traffic lights! There are loads of places to eat so make the most of sitting in the sun and tasting some of the amazing local fish and seafood. There are a couple of 'Must See' features. The first is the Fremantle markets, which is a mass of small stores selling everything from craft things through to fruit and veg. The only problem is that they are only open at weekends, but they are open into the evenings. Check the opening times with the local tourist information centre before making a special trip. There is also the old Jail, which was the first building built at the settlement. It is not a complete building anymore but there are some cells still open so that you can see the conditions that prisoners lived in. There is also a voluntary organisation that maintains the site and provides you with information about its history. There are a number of different museums in the area that can be worth exploring. There is one particular one that is dedicated to a single shipwreck. Everything in the museum came from the same site and there is detailed information on the way that everything was salvaged. The best bit is that entry is by voluntary contribution so great if you are on a tight budget! The nightlife is also really good with loads of restaurants and bars open every night. The streets are always buzzing with people wandering from place to place. Nicer to wander around than Perth! Anyway Fremantle is w
ell worth exploring for the day / evening so don't miss it!
