Description: The Gambia, officially the Republic of The Gambia, commonly known as Gambia, is a country in Western Africa. It is the ... more
Gambia ... smallest country on the African continental mainland and is bordered to the north, east, and south by Senegal, and has a small coast on the Atlantic Ocean in the west. The River Gambia flows through the centre of the country and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. On 18 February 1965, The Gambia became independent from the British Empire. Banjul is its capital. The Gambia is a very small and narrow country whose borders mirror the meandering Gambia River. The country is less than 48 km wide, with a total area of 11,300 km². Its present boundaries were defined in 1889 after an agreement between the United Kingdom and France. It is almost an enclave of Senegal and the smallest country on the continent of Africa.

I visited the Gambia in March. I was only there for a week and travelling on my own so didn't get a comprehensive feel for the place but would like to go back. The 'bumsters' as they are known can be a little annoying but I found it strange that there were so many comments about them in the Gambia even though I've had similar experiences all across Africa. I did find that it was worth it to employ a 'guide' for a very minimal fee (probably a couple of pounds for a whole afternoon) to accompany me into the town and through the market. I visited Gambia this February and found it to be very hot - 30 degrees to be precise! The airport was basic to say the least but fine for what it was... a trend the remainder of the holiday had. The Island is very poor, with tourists being their main source of income. The majority of locals live in small, almost shanty like houses, however we felt safe throughout our stay. The hotels are vast and immaculate, the service is also incredible - mainly because most people that go there do not leave the hotel as everywhere else is quite run down. We found the restaurants to be cafe like and inexpensive.... but the quality of food was simply amazing and ten miles better than ...  Read the complete review

I flew to the Gambia in the first week of November 2008, which is the first chartered flight of the season from the UK. For the three months prior to this it is the Gambia's wet season and travel in this time becomes difficult. For me the Gambia was my first time in Africa and anothe ambition ticked. What struck me first was just how green the Gambia was. Tip for you, if like me you are obsessed with travel and anything to do with travel sit on the left side of the plane as the route flies right down the coast of Morroco, Mauraitania and the Senagal. The view of the Sahara in Mauritania is un-believable and seeing Dakar, Senegal from the air just makes me ...  Read the complete review

We visited Gambia in March last year and absolutely loved it. Our children were 8 and 4 at the time and we couldn't have met such nice happy people as we did in this country. The weather was as you would imagine, very hot!, outside our room were Mango trees which would have been great if we had gone a bit later in the year as they weren't ripe when we stayed. You have to be careful out of your main complex because you always get accosted by the luck boys who want to be your friend, if you tell them to sod off (in a nice way!) then they leave you alone but if this kind of thing bothers you then you can get a bit nervous by it. We did ...  Read the complete review

I actually ended up going to The Gambia after postponing my wedding, 4 years ago this month. One of the things we had given a deposit on was our honeymoon, to Cuba, but eventually we decided to postpone it for a year or so, as the stress was too much and all the venues we looked at were booked on the date we had planned. We had paid around £250 deposit with Travel Choice, and luckily because it was a premium booking we were able to change our destination to a cheaper one. When looking at the options we decided on Gambia as it was so cheap and hot in March, which was when we were going away. The trip cost us £330 per person for a week self catering in a ...  Read the complete review
