Advantages: Low prices for flights, hotels and stay
Disadvantages: Sub-par beaches, places to visit, etc
I visited the Gambia in March. I was only there for a week and travelling on my own so didn't get a comprehensive feel for the place but would like to go back.
The 'bumsters' as they are known can be a little annoying but I found it strange that there were so many comments about them in the Gambia even though I've had similar experiences all across Africa. I did find that it was worth it to employ a 'guide' for a very minimal fee (probably a couple of pounds for a whole afternoon) to accompany me into the town and through the market. Being a young female travelling alone I was receiving a lot of attention and he was able to ward much of it off, as well as take me to some of the spots i would not have had the guts to explore on my own. You do have to be a little strong-willed though and resist the charms of the many shop-keepers they introduce you to. You can't buy everything after all!
The beaches were alright but really nothing much compared to a lot of Africa and the Middle East. If it weren't for the cheap flights and holiday deals I don't think the Gambia would be able to compete.
Summary: Nice for a quick holiday in the sun, good people, cheap prices, not too much to see.

- 02/06/09 im starting to notice a theme of fizzywizzy and cat19 making negative comments about peoples reviews, maybe if everybody who has had this from these 2 should report them. What they are saying is not constructive criticism that could be of use to help the reviewer make changes it is generally bad mannered and of no use except to 'bully' |

- 02/06/09 Good review Sarah and welcome to Dooyoo, i myself have been to Gambia and for the benefit of Cat, bumpsters are basically locals who beg and try to get you to buy crafts etc, you get them all over, but we were warned especially in Gambia about them, i don't know why, they all understood no meant no, but then i am strongminded and don't mess about. I didn't find getting to Gambia cheap but hey, i'd go back with cheap flights etc. I'm sure you can appreciate some more info would make this review even better but hey guides, aren't you here to set an example and be helpful, not leave quite blunt, rude comments on a newbie's wall, it could be perceived as bullying - not good, think we should all get along, it's a community after all! x x |
