Advantages: Hot all year round, Clean white beaches, Only a five hour flight

Disadvantages: Not a lot to do, Beggars, Boring food

I have just returned from a holiday to The Gambia. As pictured in most holiday brouchures The Gambia has white sandy beaches, blue skies and an average daily temperature of 80 degrees.

If you are considering The Gambia as a holiday destination, I think you should be aware of the following:-

Firstly you need to have JABS! Polio, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Hepititus and take malaria tablets.

All the hotels are of a basic nature, the food is also very basic most buffet style hotel restaurants serve various varieties of stews, with rice and vegetables. (Which was ok for the first two nights).

It is recommended that when you leave your hotel, you are accompanied by a tour guide or other appropriate person. As with most third world places, there are people begging and trying to sell you stuff where ever you go.

Not a great deal going on at night, most hotels have cabarets put on by the tour reps and locals.

Its the kind of holiday you would like if you just wanted to stay in your hotels grounds and bake in the red hot sun all day.

Dont let me put you off though, it really was very picturesque, but i'm glad I only booked for one week!

If you stayed in the hotel grounds & baked in the hot sun, you made a big mistake - you would have missed out on the warmth, friendliness & hospitality of the Gambian people & a chance to experience a different lifestyle & culture. There are also plenty of things to do, places to visit etc. You should have read my op on the subject before you went!! Janna

Doesn't sound for me. If I go somewhere I like to see the country/people etc not the hotel. Welcome to Dooyoo by the way, good luck - Kay
