Advantages: pleasant, good wine, good beer

Disadvantages: food!

I just had to write my opinion about Germany. When I was a student in the late 80s I had to spend a year abroad as an assistant teacher in Germany. I was sent off to Kassel in North Hessen, and at first I thought I was going to have a horrible time.... but that did not last for long!

the first myth that should be dispelled is the Germans. They are generally a wonderfully warm and friendly nation. Imagine what everyone's operception of the Brits would be if they looks at the mobs in Marbella? The Germans know when to have a good laugh and they certainly know how to enjoy themselves.

There a number of tips to use if you are staying in Germany for any time:

1- try to speak the language- they will not laugh at you. they will appreciate it and will help you with your pronunciation- and they may even buy you a drink!

2- don't try to put them down with regard to football or military prowess- the modern Germans don't really want to talk about the past, and I had to endure that World Cup semi-final in germany in a pub!

3- Germans are not nazis! this is extremely stupid and hurtful and should be got rid of as an idea at once.

I would liek to end by saying that everyone should try to visit germany- great nightlife, great people and wonderful hospitality.

I agree with MALU. German food is not as bad as you think! Perhaps you were in the wrong place?

I had expected a more detailed account after one year in Germany! You mentioned food as a disadvantage, but didn't elaborate. Well, well, I could allow an Italian or a French person to complain about German food, but certainly not a Brit! "Wer im Glashaus sitzt, soll nicht mit Steinen werfen!" (so steht's in der Bibel). I love GB, but go there DESPITE the food as do all my friends and colleagues.
