Golden Circle (Iceland)Newest Review: ... nor as idyllic looking as Godafoss. It makes for a nice photo or two and is nice to look at but the roaring sensation isn't particularly evident. There's a nice little centre there where you can pick up some interesting info on the area. The geysirs Geysir and Strokkur were more up to scratch, impressive at any time but ideally you want to see Geysir reach it's full capacity which happens ... more |

The Golden Circle is a collection of sightseeing destinations in Southern Iceland, I feel that they are little over-rated. It seems that a lot of weekend or short stay visitors from Northern Europe and America plough into these 3, Reykjavik and Blue Lagoon and leave it at that, due to this there's bus loads of tourists which take away the special feeling you can find at the more isolated Icelandic sights. Gullfoss in particular was a bit disappointing, perhaps it was because it was the 3rd major waterfall that I saw and wasn't a patch on Dettifoss powerwise nor as idyllic looking as Godafoss. It makes for a nice photo or two and is nice to look at but the ... Read the complete review

**Introduction** At about £55 per person, this is not a cheap day out but at 7 - 8 hours duration, neither is it a short one. On balance, I certainly enjoyed this day, felt I had value for money, was pleased to see more of Iceland than just Reykjavik (which I did not find particularly exciting) and felt I had more of a handle on the place: And by the way, the part of Iceland you get to see if really very beautiful. **The day** The day started with our being collected about 8.30am by mini-bus from our central Reykjavik Hotel (see my review on the Radisson SAS 1919 Hotel, Reykjavik for more details) and taken a couple of miles to the main bus station, ... At 8am, on a snowy Easter morning in Reykjavik, the amazing super-truck emerged. We clambered up into the cab that was mounted on top of 4 wheels - wheels that were almost as tall as me. This alone was enough of a reason to be glad we had decided to go on the guided tour rather than hire our own car! Unlike some other reviewers, I would really recommend going on one of the Golden Circle day tours rather than putting together a DIY version. Firstly, you get about 6 hours of commentary from (hopefully) a knowledgeable and humorous guide. Our local guide Sicki gave us insights into Icelandic life: the difficulties of living in an economy ... Read the complete review

The Golden Circle is one of the most amazing days out in the world, I personally loved Iceland when i visited for a long weekend in Feb. The 3 main stops on the journey are Pingvellir which is a small town, Gullfoss which is a breath taking waterfall and also the geothermal geysers. Before i start - my biggests tip to anyone visiting iceland and wanting to go around the golden circle is to hire a car, which are very cheap and drive your self and do not go on a tour. The drive is very easy to navigate as there are very few roads around this area in iceland and all the attactions are very well sign posted. However if you are a slightly nervy ... Thingvellir, Gullfoss and Geysir form the "Golden Circle" of tourist attractions in South-West Iceland. Thingvellir National Park is a little to the west of the other two, and is the ancestral site of the Icelandic parliament. The area is peppered with sheer cliffs and enormous crevices - clearly indicating its location between the European and North American plates! The area there is stunningly beautiful - Thingvellir itself is located on the edge of the country's largest lake, Thingvallavatn. Geysir is the site of an enormous geyser, the one after which all the spouting hot springs in the world were named. Geysir itself has been dormant ... Read the complete review
