At 8am, on a snowy Easter morning in Reykjavik, the amazing super-truck emerged. We clambered up into the cab that was mounted on top of 4 wheels - wheels that were almost as tall as me.

This alone was enough of a reason to be glad we had decided to go on the guided tour rather than hire our own car!

Unlike some other reviewers, I would really recommend going on one of the Golden Circle day tours rather than putting together a DIY version.

Firstly, you get about 6 hours of commentary from (hopefully) a knowledgeable and humorous guide. Our local guide Sicki gave us insights into Icelandic life: the difficulties of living in an economy that relies on imports, the religious and cultural history of the country and how to make putrefied shark! It made us feel like we were getting the inside story, not just visiting places as a tourist.

We also got to go places in that super-truck that aren't so easy to get to in a hire car. As we made our way up a glacier, Sicki told us that the previous week he'd pulled five Ford Fiestas out of the snow on the way up!

At the top of the glacier we all got out and went snow mobile riding. I cannot recommend this highly enough!! It is really expensive but it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we thought it was worth every penny. Speeding along across vast white landscapes was amazing! Doing the guided tour allows you to add components like this (or husky sledging etc) for less cost than doing it as a separate activity. The company we did it with (The Activity Group) charge 259 euros per person for the day - and they provide all the equipment and clothing for the activity.

Of course, all the sites on the tour were absolutely breathtaking. Iceland has scenery that makes you feel like you are on another planet - lava fields, geysers, frozen waterfalls, fault lines... The Golden Circle tour is an excellent way to see all these essential sites in one day - really maximizing what you can pack into a short trip.

My Golden Circle tour was probably one of my most memorable holiday experiences and I think it will continue to be for many years!
