Advantages: Own airport with a reasonably good range of low-cost options

Disadvantages: Some areas are quite hilly, be prepared if you have difficulty walking

Granada is one of the most beautiful cities that I have visited, and definitely the most beautiful that I have visited in Spain. (I have visited Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Cordoba, Seville and Malaga). It's location at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range is stunning. I visited in March and there was still snow on the mountain tops although it was in the mid-twenties in the city itself. Although certainly no match for any alpine resorts, you can ski in the Sierra Nevada so could be an ideal short ski/city break destination. The Alhambra palace is simply breathtaking, particularly if you walk up the hill opposite. I recommend being there at sunset, it really is magical. If you do want to visit the palace itself and see all its moorish wonders you have to be prepared and book in advance as it gets very busy. I have to say that although Granada is a major tourist destination, the city certainly has not lost its sense of 'Spanishness'. In fact, I found it to be one of the most quintessentially Spanish cities I have visited. The food, culture and people are amazing. One good tip if you are travelling on a budget, almost every bar will offer tapas with each drink you buy. Although traditional tapas is available, some bars have extended this and include things such as small plates of pasta or maybe even a beef burger. A great way to be fed for free!

Summary: Stunning city, a must see.
