Forget the popular image of Colorado - snow-capped mountains - which actually only cover 40% of the state. Grand Junction is situated near the western border with Utah - and is on the high plain that runs to the Sierra Nevada in California. We're talking semi-arid desert - mountainous in places, and really really remote - except for the interstate! Grand Junction is a small yet thriving town, that happens to be just 4 miles east of the Colorado National Monument.
