Advantages: Variety, Simple but tasty

Disadvantages: Fish is expensive

Greek food is simple yet delicious, varied with something for all tastes and at it's very best in a Taverna in Greece!

This summer I visited my 3rd Greek Island - Plakias in Crete in 1997, Alikanas, Zante in 2000 and Pefkos in Rhodes last week! And I am now a devoted fan of Greek food!

The majority of people visit Greece as part of a Package Holiday. In these resorts, everyone speaks English and the majority of activities cater for us Brits - hardly a great insite into the Greek culture. But this is why I love the food so much. I am quite well-travelled and I have found that investigating the food of a foriegn country one of the most fascinating and exciting aspects of holidays abroad!

When it comes to Greek food, I say 'be adventurous'. Order something that you can't pronounce and have no idea what is in it - that's all part of the excitement!

Let me tell you about some of my favourite Greek dishes...

* MUSAKA...the Greeks answer to Lasagne! Potatoe, aubergine and mince layered together and topped in cheese - very simple and delicious...good choice for new comers to Greek cuisine.

* STIFADO...tomatoey, beef caserole. Yummy!

* KLEFTIKA...similar to Stifado but usually made with lamb

* GYRA...Mince and vegeatbles in a pita bread

* STEFFED TOMATOES/PEPPERS/VINE LEAVES...one of the very few vegetarian Greek specialities. Vegetables stuffed with rice and nuts - try the vine leaves, sounds gross, but suprisingly nice!

* DEEP FRIED FETA...usually quite spicey and served on a bed of red onions - delicious and suprisingly filling. Can be a starter or a main course.

* TZATZIKI...yogurty, garlicy, herby dip - you can buy little packets of the mix and then add Greek yoghurt to make it yourself.

* TARASMATALATA...fish roe - completely different from the tubs from Tesco!

* BAKLAVA...Sweet Greek pastry but can be a little dry - order it
with ice-cream and you can't go wrong!

* FISH...huge selection of fish with many cheap special dishes of the day. Apparantly the octopus and squid are good (slightly out of my price range though!). A cheaper option is swordfish which was lovely - texture of chicken but taste of fish.

* GREEK SALAD...my personal favourite - I love Feta cheese (not Tesco's verions though!). The salas consists of layers of lettuce, cabbage, pepper, tomato, cucumber, raw red onion, feta cheese and garnished with a few olives.

* GREEK DELIGHT...Fry's Turkish Delight has nothing in authentic traditional Greek Delight. If you buy some to take home, buy it at the ned of your stay as it can melt!!!

You must visit Greece is only to taste the food - its Yum!

Looks like it'll be a lot of salad and tzatziki for my veggie girlfriend & I when we go next month! Wonder if Linda McCartney's got as far as their moussaka yet? Cheers, John

I have visited several Greek islands and love the food as well as the country. The best food I have experienced has been in Loggos on Paxos. I can well recommend a trip!
