In the south of Tuscany about five miles south of Grosseto there is situated a younger national park of Italy (founded in June 1975), the Parco regionale della Maremma. It is accessible from the north and the south via the SS1 Aurelia. Maremma is actually called the entire area which was in former times an avoided swamp area and thus a disease source for malaria and others. However, since long the swamps are drained and the whole area is characterised by the many channels. It has become a particularly beautiful piece of nature in which even wild horses found a home.
