As the standards of writing get increasingly higher, I will split this into two sections. For those who appreciate the story and personal side of things, I will write a travelogue of the time I spent in Guadeloupe in 1987, when my ship HMS Southampton spent 4 days alongside. Then for the factual people who prefer to know the ins and outs of the Islands, I will give stats and facts in the second half. I went to Guadeloupe with my family at the tender age of 13. It is a french speaking island near the larger and more famous island of Martinique. The fact that Guadeloupe is a French speaking Island means that it is somewhat overlooked by British tourists. We were lucky as my dad is friends with a local man who let us stay in their house whilst they were on holiday, this meant we didn't get the full touristy experience, instead we got to explore the real Guadeloupe. We hired one of the local cars a 'mini Moke' which is a hilarious kind of mini jeep with no doors or roof so its quite scary. This allowed us to travel round the island and see some of the ...
