Description: Guatemala, officially the Republic of Guatemala (Spanish: República de Guatemala), is a country in Central America ... more
Guatemala ... bordered by Mexico to the northwest, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize and the Caribbean Sea to the northeast, and Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast. The most populous nation in Central America, Guatemala is best known for its historical role as a major seat of Pre-Columbian cultures, particularly the Mayans. Numerous sites of major archaeological significance have been discovered, including the ruins of the ancient city of Tikal. The abundance of sites has led the BBC to name Guatemala as the first cultural destination in the world, and helps supply the nation with a healthy stream of tourists (1.4 million in 2006). Guatemala is also home to several volcanoes, some of which can be climbed even though they are still active. Lake Atitlan is a large lake with volcanoes on its shores. Legend has it that the entire lake is actually the huge crater of an ancient volcano. Other than tourism, Guatemala's economy depends largely upon agriculture, with coffee and sugar among its main exports.

Guatemala is an excellent destination for anyone who enjoys adventure. I have recently returned from a 3 month travelling expedition with my girlfriend through Mexico, Belize, Honduras and Guatemala. Guatemala is a beautiful country, covered in dense jungle, with mountains, lakes, volcanos and ancient ruins, From Belize city we caught a bus to the border of Guatemala, where another bus took us to lake Piten Itza. Busses are frequent and very cheap, although slightly uncomforatble. We had decided to stay in a small area by the lake called El Cruce, which meant getting of the bus before it arrives at its main destination, Flores. We stayed in one of the ...  Read the complete review

Guatemala is every traveller's dream. Within its 100 000 or so square km, you are treated to almost every type of geographical zone imaginable, including volcanoes, tropical rain forest, lazy carribean coast, crashing pacific surf, massive river gorges and so on. Culturally it is the heartland of Mayan Central America, and as such has a myriad of old temple sites, mostly situated in cloud covered tropical jungles, replete with howler monkeys, toucans and tree frogs to name but a few of the cool animals you might meet. This combination of awesome geographical features coupled with an ancient civilisation wandering around in their traditonal garb, makes for an ...  Read the complete review
