HalifaxNewest Review: ... to say this is what I did! There are lots of historic sites and museums to visit in Halifax, some of which I will write separate opinions on. In brief the main sites are - The Citadel - which is the old fort which sits on top of the hill overlooking Halifax. The Nova Scotia museum - which covers history, wildlife, geology, people and industry. The history se ction contains a real stagecoach. Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia and is situated on a peninsula jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean. It has a population of about 120,000 and is the largest city in the Canadian Maritime Provinces. Halifax has a varied history. It was the home of Canada's first government, first Protestant church and the first Canadian newspaper - quite a hive of activity! Halifax is home to Canada's largest naval base and is the busiest port on the East Coast as it can be used year round unlike others that close due to ice in the winter. Ok, so here's the deal. Halifax, Nova Scotia is stuck out on the Atlantic coast, hundreds of miles from nearest large city - erm Montreal or Boston. It does however have 7 universities and the world's 2nd largest natural harbour - so it spreads it's 350000 people around the water and is full of lively bars and studenty places to hang out. Particularly good places to drink include the Economy Shoe Shop and someplace by the harbour where they give you free beer! Transport is ok, with cracking Train journey from Quebec and reasonable bus links and highways, but really the citizens of this old colonial province are happy to be isolated, although annoyed at ...
