Yes, believe it or not Harare is actually a really great city. Take it from me, I lived there for 2 1/2yrs, only leaving there in April this year (because I couldn't extend my visa any longer not because of the violence). For the really touristy places, the Kopje ( a "large" hill near the centre of the city) offers great views of the city. Mbari is one of the poorest areas of Harare, but also boasts the best market for buying souvineers, make sure you only take the bear essentials along and don't go flashing large wads of money or expensive cameras around or you won't have them for very long. Yes, I thought that that title might hve caught your attention. "Does he mean the same Harare which is on the news featured as a violent and dangerous city?" I hear you ask, well YES I do mean that same city. I was there just one year ago and I found it safer than the U.K. Hitchiking was common and safe to do. Ok - probably not the best time to plug Zimbabwe as a destination but bear it in mind for future reference. Driving from the airport to the city - you could be more or less anywhere - it's a city, right. Even strangely familiar with it's British style street signs and post boxes. But by the time you've unpacked you start to realise you're on the other side of the world - and it's quite exciting and scary. Beautiful Harare Gardens are right in the city centre - see all sorts of exotica - like Bird of Paradise plants and Poinsettas growing OUTSIDE!
