Havana ... forms one of the 14 provinces of Cuba, with the province called "City of Havana" (Ciudad de La Habana). With a city population of more than 2.3 million, and a metropolitan area population of over 3 million, Havana is the largest city in both Cuba and the Caribbean. It is located just over 144 kilometres (90 miles) south-southwest of Key West, Florida. It is located on the northwest coast of Cuba, facing the Straits of Florida, and is surrounded by Havana Province to the south, east, and west.

Havana itself is separated into municipos and the three main ones that we were either staying in or visited are Habana Viejo, Vedado and Centro Habana. The Nacional was located in Vedado while the majority of the places of interest are located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site that is Habana Viejo. Getting around Havana ... more

Crowned Review Havana: One down many more to go (1822 words)

Cuba was one of those places that I had always wanted to visit for many years and in particular I wanted to visit while Castro influence was prevalent on the island as this means it offers a rare experience as it one of only two socialist command economy systems left in operation after the opening up of many other new markets. Spam, ham, chopped pork and tongue; six innocuous words and yet they form a who’s who from the premier league of packed lunch legends. The only omission? Why none other than the prince of processed meats, the one the only and the incomparable, capital c capital b -Corned Beef. Versatile, cheap and packaged in its unique type of tin, this family staple has long been a favourite of mine and yet society shuns it. Indeed society looks down upon it “Argentine muck,” I hear some say “Botulism in a box,” comment others and it makes me sad. But then, day of days, I stare in disbelief.
