I can't say enough good things about this place! Hoi An is a beautiful little town sitting on the South China Sea in Central Vietnam, it is easily accessed by bus from Hue (4 hours), Nha Trang (10 hours) and HCMC (+15 hours). The town itself is famous for its tailor shops and there is literally one on every street corner. You get used to being hassled to buy tailor made clothes but the people are just super friendly and they want to show off what they can make for you at such a reasonable price. First a bit of history: In 1999, the old town was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as a well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port of the 15th to 19th centuries. The buildings display a blend of local and foreign influences and because of this the government have stopped any building that is not in keeping with this old town so there are no ugly high rise buildings. Today, Hoi An is still a small city, you can easily walk around the whole town and you do have to walk as cars are banned in the main town centre which makes it much easier though no less crowded as motor bikes are not banned and go quite fast round the little streets. If you're travelling in Vietnam and you get the chance, break your journey in Hoi An, its well worth it. Less well known than the big cities whose names are almost synonymous with the war, Hoi An is a quiet market town about 30Km south of Danang (a dump, avoid) between Hue and Na Trang. Most people get there on the big overnight buses or the smaller hotel minibuses than run from town to town up and down the coast. If you're taking the Unification Express you would have to get a bus from Danang.
