Hong Kong

Description: The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Traditional Chinese: ... more
Hong Kong ... 香港特別行政區 [pronunciation]), commonly known as Hong Kong[3] (Chinese: 香港), is one of the two special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with Macau. Comprising more than 260 islands, the territory is located on the eastern side of the Pearl River Delta, bordering Guangdong province in the north and facing the South China Sea in the east, west and south. Hong Kong was a Crown colony of the United Kingdom from 1842 until the transfer of sovereignty to the People's Republic of China in 1997. The Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Hong Kong stipulate that Hong Kong will operate with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2047, fifty years after the transfer. Under the policy of "one country, two systems", the Central People's Government is responsible for the territory's defence and foreign affairs, while Hong Kong maintains its own legal system, police force, monetary system, customs policy, immigration policy, and delegates to international organizations and events.

Some of the modern architecture in Hong Kong competes with any modern day cities but the ancient Chinese philosophy of feng shui has played a part in this city's skyline, although the impressive building Bank of China surprisingly seems to flout some of these rules but remains an important landmark. Premium Review Hong Kong: a real taste of the orient (707 words)

Hong Kong - A Taste of the Orient - another of my favourite cities. Hong Kong is a city that never sleeps, the New York of the east with a dose of the orient chucked in for good measure. Its gritty reality means Hong Kong is the real deal, far removed from the sanitised versions of the Far East found in cities like Singapore. Gateway to China and a consumer and cultural haven packed into small area, Hong Kong has something for everyone. Ideal for a holiday or shorter stopover it is an intoxicating place and while it may be quite westernised Chinese traditions dominate. The grandeur of the high rises of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon are ...  Read the complete review

Hong Kong I visited Hong Kong and China for the first time this past June/July. I must admit I didn't enjoy it much at the time, so don't expect too much enthusing. This is because I was ill the first week of my trip (when I was in Hong Kong), experiencing some bad culture shock and, as a result, being exceedingly homesick. In hindsight the negative aspects of the trip were certainly outweighed by the positives, it's just hard to appreciate when you are feeling like you want nothing more than to board the next flight home. It got to the point where I actually looked forwards to a cool, rainy, Scottish summer. I am splitting my review into likes and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Hong Kong: fragrant harbour where my heart remains moored. (406 words)

I am going to declare a bias, first of all: Hong Kong is my all-time favourite place in the entire world. You can see where this review is going. I went to Hong Kong for the first time for a ten-day period. It is clear that this is not long enough to see the whole of any city - that is especially true of somewhere like Hong Kong. There are a few cities in the world that truly never sleep and Hong Kong is one of them. It comes from a unique standpoint, historically. Clearly Hong Kong is now part of China but for a long time, it was a British colony; in fact, it was only handed back to China in 1997. The culture is therefore a strange mixture of ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review An amazing, exciting city (209 words)

My husband and I decided to visit Hong Kong after hearing some fantastic stories of how lovely it was. We managed to get a very good package through a holiday company and spent five nights in the Eaton Hotel. Hong Kong is such a vibrant place and the first night we arrived we just walked around in awe, there is such an exciting feeling about the place. Public transport is excellet in Hong Kong and you can travel on the metro, buses and taxis for very little money. We walked a lot of places as well as you see some interested sights as you walk around the city. Although our hotel was on Kowloon, we spent a lot of time over on Hong Kong island, especially in Stanley which ...  Read the complete review

Hong Kong, officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China. The territory lies on the eastern side of the Pearl River Delta, bordering Guangdong province in the north and facing the South China Sea. Beginning as a trading port in the 19th century, Hong Kong has developed into a leading worldwide financial centre. Hong Kong was also a crown colony of the United Kingdom from 1842 until the transfer of its sovereignty to the People's Republic of China in 1997. There are some places in the world that I am desperate to visit for obvious reasons, such as the natural wonder of ...  Read the complete review
