Advantages: Beautiful setting, friendly people, free wine!

Disadvantages: Not for everbody

Im far from being a wino, infact i absolutly hate red wine, however whilst travelling the east coast my girlfriend did a night walk in a rainforest which she didnt want to do so i reluctantly agreed to do something she wanted to do-this was her choice.

Firstly i have to say how wrong i was! it is true that some of the best things are unexpected, and this was certainly the case with the Hunter Valley.

I took it upon myslef to make it a personal quest to find a red wine that i did actually like, and although i failed in my quest, my eyes were opened into how wine was made, and i can certainly appreciate wine a lot more than before.

There are many ways to visit the valley, as stated its about 90mins away from Sydney so is easily a car journey away, however if like me you were travelling and had no car, there are plenty of tours, whether they be a days tour, or a longer tour. Due to time constraints we took the day tour.

Included in the price of around 50pound we had the return bus back to Sydney, breakfast and all of the wine we wanted to taste! We started off by being dropped off at the YHA where we met our guide and the others in the group, had breakfast and got started on our journey.

I think i have to say that the valley itself is an exceptional place to visit in itself, its so tranquil and relaxing, you feel you could just stay there and watch the world pass by quite comfortably.

In total we visited about 6 wineries, learning lots about how they make the wine and the different grapes used and how these change the flavours of the wine. The people were so frinedly, inviting us into their houses if they were small concerns and allowing us to try their wine for free and possibly buy some afterwards.

We ended up buying about 4 bottles and could have bought lots more, they make great presents as we brought them home for our parents-a bottle of wine chosen personally from the other side of the world is a great present.

Overall i believe that this certainly wont be for everybody, however if i can be converted to having a great time with wine, then i think most people should at least give this a go.

Summary: A great time out, not for everyone but just give it a go, you wont know until you try.
