Iceland is one of the worlds best kept secrets. Stunning scenery that words simply can’t describe. Flying in to Keflavik over the lava fields reminded me of Lanzarote, only these lava fields are far more weathered, and moss and lichen have covered the rocks unlike the jet black basalt of the Spanish island. In a country with a population of just 300,000 it’s amazing how efficient the infra structure is. There have been hydrogen-fuelled buses carting commuters around Reykjavik for years now. My visit to Iceland lasted a week in October of 2002 and was organized through my school. I thought that not only would a holiday with all of my friends be a great way to relax before the stress of year 10 GCSE syllabus kicked into full swing but also a great learning experience as a studier of GCSE geography. The trip set me (or my parents) back a mere £500 for my travelling and accommodation expenses which I thought was reasonable but since I?m not a frequent traveller I may well be wrong. This is my personal top 10 and I'm sure many people will disagree both with the content and the order. 1. Jokulsarlon - Southern Iceland. The name means Glacial River Lagoon. It is formed by glacial retreat and is several miles long and wide. You can hear ice breaking off the glacier and see icebergs floating through the lagoon and towards the sea. It is possible to go on a boat in amongst the icebergs which I greatly recommend. 2. Drive a 4x4 to Landmannalaugar - Uninhabited central highlands of Iceland. 4x4s are not cheap to hire but the drive from Reykjavik along dirt tracks for much of the way is great as is the final river crossing if you are ...
