Iceland ... Europe, comprising the island of Iceland and its outlying islets in the North Atlantic Ocean between Greenland, Norway, Ireland,UK and the Faroe Islands. As of April 2007, it had a population of 309,699. Its capital and largest city is Reykjavík. Iceland has a history of habitation since about the year 874 when, according to Landnámabók, the Norwegian chieftain Ingólfur Arnarson became the first permanent Norwegian settler on the island. Others had visited the island earlier and stayed over winter. Over the next centuries, people of Nordic and Gaelic origin settled in Iceland. Until the twentieth century, the Icelandic population relied on fisheries and agriculture, and was from 1262 to 1944 a part of the Norwegian and later the Danish monarchies. Today, Iceland is a highly developed country, the world's fifth and second in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and human development respectively. Iceland is a member of the UN, NATO, EEA, and OECD.

Newest Review: ... bird watching - over 300 species of bird have been seen here. I wouldn’t recommend Iceland to casual wildlife watchers who want to see a lot of animals roaming freely on the plains, however there is one type of animal that everybody should try to see if they come to Iceland, and that happens to be the whales. I can safely say, there is virtually a 100% success rate at seeing these wonderful ... more

Premium Review Iceland: Stunning landscapes in a little world of its own (953 words)

Iceland is one of the worlds best kept secrets. Stunning scenery that words simply can’t describe. Flying in to Keflavik over the lava fields reminded me of Lanzarote, only these lava fields are far more weathered, and moss and lichen have covered the rocks unlike the jet black basalt of the Spanish island. In a country with a population of just 300,000 it’s amazing how efficient the infra structure is. There have been hydrogen-fuelled buses carting commuters around Reykjavik for years now. They are smooth, silent and non-polluting. About 70% of all the energy that Icelanders use in total is from geothermal sites and hydroelectric power stations meaning that ...  Read the complete review

My visit to Iceland lasted a week in October of 2002 and was organized through my school. I thought that not only would a holiday with all of my friends be a great way to relax before the stress of year 10 GCSE syllabus kicked into full swing but also a great learning experience as a studier of GCSE geography. The trip set me (or my parents) back a mere £500 for my travelling and accommodation expenses which I thought was reasonable but since I?m not a frequent traveller I may well be wrong. Also it must be taken into account that it was a school organized visit and so the costs could be lower as it was a group of children. Also to keep the costs down we spent ...  Read the complete review

This is my personal top 10 and I'm sure many people will disagree both with the content and the order. 1. Jokulsarlon - Southern Iceland. The name means Glacial River Lagoon. It is formed by glacial retreat and is several miles long and wide. You can hear ice breaking off the glacier and see icebergs floating through the lagoon and towards the sea. It is possible to go on a boat in amongst the icebergs which I greatly recommend. 2. Drive a 4x4 to Landmannalaugar - Uninhabited central highlands of Iceland. 4x4s are not cheap to hire but the drive from Reykjavik along dirt tracks for much of the way is great as is the final river crossing if you are ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Iceland - The land that time forgot (535 words)

We were looking for the Ice House Hotel, thinking it would be in Iceland and stumbled across the idea of going to Iceland on holiday. Most people thought we were mad, as Iceland is not high on most people?s list of holiday destinations but IT SHOULD BE. Iceland is great to escape the fast capitalist life styles we tend to lead. The main reason we visited Iceland was for the photography. If you are interested in photography then this place is ideal. The waterfalls are unbelievable, especially svartifoss, seljandsfoss, skogafoss and gulfoss, and put any in Britain to shame. The landscape in general is quite bleak, Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong went to ...  Read the complete review

When looking for a destination for a company 'bonus trip' Iceland was one of the first places on everybody's lips. It's one of those places that most people say they would love to visit but never actually get round to it. From what we had heard prior to departure it would be a great place for a group trip or stag do, perhaps with plenty of daytime excursions and a nightlife of some repute. A two hour flight from Glasgow was short enough to keep enthusiasm high and we immediately got straight into the thick of things, taking the 15 minute journey to the Blue Lagoon. By far the best part of the whole trip, the experience of sitting ...  Read the complete review
