Ios ... an important source of income in Greece. Here, the popular Milopotas Beach in the island of Ios. Ios is a hilly island with cliffs down to the sea on most sides, situated halfway between Naxos and Santorini. It is about 18km (11 mi) long and 10km (6 mi) wide, with an area of about 105 km˛ (41 mi˛). Population was 1,820 in 2006 (down from 3,500 in the 19th century).

Ios is one of the Cyclades islands in Greece, and it is very popular with twenty something tourists in July and August. Away from the peak season, it is more sedate and in winter it is pretty much unspoilt. The easier way to get there is from the Piraeus port in Athens by boat or ferry. Arriving at the port is nice although you will probably be already figuring out that a family place this island is not, and that there are literally 2-3 males for each female in the island, and they are high in testosterone. What a mad place this was when i lived there 9 years ago. Basically in winter it's home to around 150 cold Greek inhabitants, in summer at least 25,000 tourists and workers invade the place and turn the place up-side down. There are well over a hundred pubs, night-clubs and eateries in the main town Chora, the average age of most of the tourists is 20-22, most people manage less than a week on very the island before they stumble back onto a ferry - the only way on or off the island (for those of us without a yacht!)
