Together with the island paradise of Cheju, Kangwon-do ranks as my favouite Korean province. With three National Parks, a beautiful coastline boasting many of Korea's best beaches and innumerable lakes and rivers, Kangwon ahould be on anyone's list of places to visit while in Korea. Kangnung is the second city of the province, after the capital,Chuncheon, with a population of 225000. The city was in world headlines in 1996 when a North Korean submarine beached nearby. The 26 Commandos onboard engaged in gun battles with South Korean troops in the course of which 11 died and a further 11 committed suicide to evade capture. Several South Korean soldiers ...
