Karachi

Description: Karachi (Urdu: كراچى, Sindhi: ڪراچي) is the capital of the ... more
Karachi ... province of Sindh, and the most populated city in Pakistan. Located on the coast of the Arabian Sea, north-west of the Indus River Delta. The city is the financial and commercial centre as well as the largest port of the country. The metropolitan area along with its suburbs comprises the world's fourth most populated city, spread over 3,530 square kilometers. The city credits its growth to the mixed populations of economic and political migrants and refugees from different national, provincial, linguistic and religious origins who have largely come to settle here permanently. It is locally termed as the City of Lights (روشنیوں کا شہر) for its liveliness and the City of The Quaid (شہرِ قائد), for not only being both the birth and death place of Muhammad Ali Jinnah the founder of Pakistan but also his home after 1947.

Premium Review Karachi: It hasnt changed much, buch has changed much (371 words)

During the late 1990's, This city of Karachi saw the most violent years of its history, and perhaps, the worst ones as well. It all appeared as if you were living in a MadMax area with gun runners all over the place. You didnt know when a bunch of Motorcyclists appear with Kalashnikovs or Makarovs in their hands, and..........It was political, and ligual. However, during the past 2-3 years, a lot has changed. Although it's still a little violent, but beleive me, it's A LOT safer when you get out of your home. The Looks have changed as if some parts of the City have been "Totally Re-done". Garbage has reduced, and roads have been ...  Read the complete review

Her nose dipped under the swell created by the cross tide, as the two waters met. I stood proudly alongside my fellow shipmates, watching, anticipating the spoils of Karachi, a jewel of Pakistan, or so we were led to believe! The first thing that hit me as we sailed ever closer to the harbour, was the way the water changed from a crystal blue, to a murky brown. Almost as if you had walked through the wardrobe into Narnia, as the ice queen had frozen the land. Then the smell, a musty aroma that grew in strength as we pulled alongside the old stone jetty. I threw the rope across to the dockside workers, which they caught and secured to a bollard fixed, for ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Karachi - IN THE EYES OF A CITIZEN! (440 words)
by - written on 22/08/00 (Very useful, 80 readings)

Karachi, a city in Pakistan is a place (or should I say a culture) which is totally different from the west. Currently it has the title of "a developing city" but I wouldn't say it is developing into anything. When people hear Karachi, the one thing that comes to their mind is the pollution and garbage! Well I wouldn't blame them. Karachi is very polluted as the population is growing rapidly, and with it, the illiteracy. Most of the people cannot afford sending their children to school and end up as beggars. Someone new in Karachi would probably get a nervous breakdown seeing the amount of poverty on the roads. Child labour is very ...  Read the complete review
