Advantages: Hot, Friendly, Cheap, Enough bars to keep the most hardcore boozer happy and great fun
Disadvantages: Beach, touts, remoteness of Kavos itself
Managed to get a late booking to the Olympian Village at the northern end of Kavos town with my girlfriend. Paid peanuts - got a fantasic apartment in one of the best complexes I've stayed at. The rooms were spacious, cool and well equipped. There was a great pool, fab staff and all the facilites you could possibly need. It's probably about 10 minutes from the beach and up a steepish hill, but look on the bright side - your safe from tsunami's.
Kavos the town..... What can you say? It's big, brash and designed to attract the Brits. I expected to see hordes of drunken brits fighting on every corner or vomiting into every gutter, thankfully I was wrong (perhaps in high season it's like that - I don't know. I went at the end of May 06). What I did find was a really unusual mix of traditional greek taverna's along with the fast food joints you would expect to find in any town high street on a saturday night (I was very surprised to see a McDonalds & KFC). The Greek taverna's were mostly on the edge of town, but there if you fancied something other than deep fried crap that the fast food joints threw at you, then you couldn't go wrong and they were also great places to enjoy a few quiet beers before heading into the town.
The nightlife is great, there is no doubt about it. Even the quietest person would find it difficult not to get drawn into the atmosphere as it picks you up and makes you start dancing. The touts are really annoying and will harass you at every step. They will cross the road and chase you up the street if they think they can get you in for a drink. I know they are doing a job and with that I have to give them some respect as they do it well. The first night we walked through the town we laughed so much at the excessive attention that we got they must have thought we were both mad.
After a few night's you have sussed out which bars you like and want to visit, so it become's a bit tedious to try and avoid the ever hopeful guys & gals trying to drag you into places you don't want to go.
The beach is a filthy hole I'm afraid to say - however there are nice golden bits if you are prepared to look for them. You will have to walk a bit but don't let that put you off as they are worth it once you get there.
There is an element of idiot brit's about, but just ignore them.
Bars we went to:-
Johns Bar (Okay it's full of old people and crap music, but it's 1.5 Euro's per pint of Amstel and once you have played up John & Georgeina a bit they start to push lots of shots your way). It's a nice place to start your evening.
The Barn. Probably the most central bar in Kavos. Music's pumping and you can't help but dance. Don't be surprised to see fella's dressed in Toga's or girls dressed as Sailors etc. Good fun.
Actually - thinking about it, I don't remember going to many others but we were normally getting too pissed by now, so we would walk back to the Olympian and polish off cocktails until late/early.
Food:-
Pavlos - Excellent Greek Taverna. Try the Lamb or Chicken Kebab. lots of great food for little cash.
Johns fast food (for brekky) - good breakfast and a really nice bright, airy place to eat.
The Golden Fleece - Traditional Greek Taverna that does superb food.
There are a whole host of taverna's - you will quickly find a favorite and try all the menu (like we did).
In conclusion - Don't come here and complain that people are crashing around at 5am drunk as it comes with the territory I'm afraid. Kavos is a great place provided you don't come with huge expectations. Just drop your case off in the room, get a few drinks down you and chill.... You will find yourself having a great time very quickly.
Summary: A mad place that you will remember for years to come.

- 31/05/06 Thanks for the comments guys, In response to plipplop about the beach - they are dirty I'm afraid. Most of the crap is some kind of seaweed that grows on the rocks just off the shoreline, this gets washed up in great clumps and is everywhere. Other than that there is the obligatory empty beer bottles left by our kinsmen (and kinswomen) and a small selection of dogshite. In all honesty - if the greeks were to comb the beach once a week it would be really nice. |
