Advantages: Interesting
Disadvantages: Not much to do once you have seen the main attractions!
I lived in Jamaica for 12 years and in Kingston for 11 of those, so I got around somewhat!! Kingston is the capital of Jamaica and not often visited by the 'typical' tourist. However, there are some lovely things to do and see there. First of all, there is Port Royal, which was at one time the capital of Jamaica before being destroyed by an earthquake. It used to be a haven for pirates and other nefarious characters and it is said the earthquake was a judgement upon them. In Port Royal, an old fort used by the British, Port William, still stands, complete with its old cannons etc..... Also in Kingston, there is Deveon House which is an old plantation house which has been painstakingly restored and preseved.Tours of the house are given daily. Devon House is also the home of Jamaica's greatest ice cream which comes in such exotic flavours as passion fruit and pistachio.....Devon House also hosts craft fairs at Christmas and Easter where you can pick up some truly wonderful souvenirs..... Then, in downtown Kingston there is a craft market open all year round where you can get souvenirs and even watch them being made.... Kingston, like most major cities has a record for crime. However, if you don't go venturing into the unknown clutching a map, liberally sprinkled with expensive cameras, and you stick to frequented areas, the threat of crime is no more than it is here. All in all, if you are visiting Jamaica, give Kingston a visit. All in all, Kingston is worth a visit.

fluffypup - 04/10/00 Not a problem! I love reading more about people's personal insights into places than from magazines and travel programmes. Thanks, I might take you up on that offer when we decide to book our honeymoon. ; ) |
