Advantages: A great all round destination
Disadvantages: I'm not there now!
The fact that I met my husband on Kos is actually incidental but I will tell you about it anyway! I went all way to sunny Kos to meet a man called Hugh (Shuggy to his mates) from a small village called Beattock about 50 minutes from Glasgow – it must have been fate. We have been married for three years now and have twin girls aged nine months. So it’s fair to say that I have a soft spot in my heart for the Island of Kos. I actually went to Kos for the first time in 1993 when I worked in the village of Kefalos for three months and I returned for a holiday with my sister two years later and met Hugh. There is so much I can tell you about this Island that I don’t know where to start. If you are looking for lots of clubs & shopping you should head for Kos Town. If you are looking for only clubs and an 18-30 type atmosphere you should head for Kardamena. If like me however, you are looking for something a wee bit more local and quieter but still with the option to let go a bit try Kefalos. NIGHTLIFE There is only one Disco in Kefalos (at least there was then) and it is called Popeyes – you will get a real mix of music & people here – everything from Madness to more modern sounds. The great thing about Popeyes is that you actually get to meet people and get to know them (I first met my husband here). Popeyes disco is owned by a character called Popeye (he will try to chat you up!) who also owns the nearby Papilons, and Annabel’s garden. BEACHES There are many nice beaches to choose from, they are not overcrowded, the water is fairly warm and it rarely gets to hot due to the constant breeze. The water is fairly shallow and clear – great for snorkelling. SHOPS There is the usual variety of shops in the area – supermarkets and souvenir but for a better selection I would get the bus to Kos Town. DAY TRIPS I would strongl
y recommend the boat trips to Patmos, Kalymmnos, Pserimos & Nissyros (Volcano). You can also go further afield to Turkey & Rhodes. On the island itself it is worth hiring a car for a day (I wouldn’t recommend a moped or motorbike) and touring the Island – the village of Zia is particularly picturesque. A day in Kos town is also a must for the shopping. EATING OUT There is a good selection of take always and restaurants in Kefalos and eating out is quite cheap. On a whole I think Kos is a great destination for a relaxing holiday with the option to be busy or wild if you want to!
