Kutna Hora is a little town in the Czech Republic approximately 70 km east of Prague. It is most famous as the location of Sedlec Ossuary which is a highly unusual and well worth visiting church (described in more detail below). It is quite a peaceful and sleepy feeling semi-rural town when compared with the noise and bustle of Prague but is a nice place to see the other side to the Czech Republic. Kutna Hora is easy enough to get to from the capital, we took the train from Prague's central station, Hlavni Nadrazi which cost us 95kr (about £3) and took around an hour. Pick ten guide books on the Czech Republic before your trip. Flick through each one until you reach Kutna Hora, and chances are, each one will highlight the ossuary as the main reason to visit this picturesque town. The ossuary. You will feel a sense of foreboding as you descend the stone steps into the crypt, passing beneath decorations made out of human bones. This will not quite prepare you for what awaits you with in. Vast pyramids of skulls. A chandelier that reportedly contains every bone of the human body. A coat of arms constructed entirely of bones. That is probably the most accurate description of what awaits here, thousands of them in fact! All piled up in a little church in the small town of Kutna Hora, easily accessible about 60km east of Prague. Kutna Hora was once a royal town and home the royal mint in the 14th century (due to the German-dominated silver mines in the surrounding districts), and today the town itself is still well-preserved with some beautiful buildings around the main square, but there isn't really very much in the way of amenities - a couple of tourist shops and a few bars, and that's about it.
