Ladakh? Never heard of it *********************** If you always assumed that India was 'tigers, taj and tandooris' then Ladakh is not going to be what you expect. This review has been written to give you just a small taste of this region and hopefully persuade some of you that it might be worth a visit. But before I start, a few comments on pronunciation. . Ladakh - La-dak with La pronounced like in French 'la'. Not Larrrr. Emphasis on the second syllable. Leh - the main city of Ladakh - pronounced Lay - like what a chicken does. Before you say "where the ... is Ladakh?" - Ladakh is a province in Northern India. However much like Scotland or Wales in the UK it is very different from the rest of country and until the 1950's was indeed a separate nation. Ladakh is placed well inside the foothills of the Himalayan mountain range and is truly magnificent. Many people would compare Ladakh to other Himalayan provinces such as Jammu&Kashmir, or Nepal or Tibet and in the physical sense of mountains and altitude, and to an extent history they are similar.
