Advantages: beautiful scenery, lots to do, quiet
Disadvantages: No nightlife if you like that kind of thing
This is my favourite place in the world. For reference, I am writing about Cadenabbia, which is in the left hand prong of the lake! I have been there a couple of times, and absolutely adore it there!!
I stayed at the Hotel Britannia Excelsior, which is a family run hotel (or was then!), and it was a gorgeous hotel! When I went it was in the process of been refurbished, so some parts of the room were a little old fashioned, but, it was comfortable, clean and tidy, and the maid came in everyday and kept the place spotless.
The hotel was full board meaning all food and all drinks were included. But thats the hotel and not the place!!!
Cadenabbia itself does not have much at all, and sits in a very quiet part of Como, with just one shop, and from what I recall (though i was only very young!) only one or two bars, but with the hotel been All In, it doesn't bother you especially as the food and drink there is perfect and cannot be compained about!!!
Cadenabbia has a lido, which belonged to the hotel which I was in, but was open to anybody, a lido been an open swimming pool with a bar, the pool itself is not a fun pool, and your made to wear a swimming cap, so I wouldnt go in!!! But the bar was funky, and the barman made gorgeous Strawberry Daqiries! :-p
Now although Cadenabbia itself doesnt have much, the hotels all offer amazing excursions, boat trips, wine tasting trips, shopping trips, even overnight trips to Venice, Milan, St Moritz and many more. As well as this, there is a VERY efficient ferry service, which runs very frequently and for extremelly cheap, where you can go over to places such as Bellagio, which is much livlier, lots of shops and restaurants. And such a pretty place to go!!! As well as that there are other little villages and towns to go to!
Theres also the Hyrdofoil which takes you to Como and from there you can easily get to Milan....the shopping capital of the world!!! All of this is very cheap, and well worth it. Now I know you might be thinking, well why stay in Cadenabbia if your going to be going elsewhere, well the thing with Cadenabbia, is that its so peaceful, so quiet, you dont have to do ANYTHING, you can relax by the pool, you can sit in the gardens and watch the lake, you can go for amazing walks. Your not in the middle of the hustle and bustle, meaning you can have a choice of what to do!!!
The place is NOT recommended for party goers, people who want just nightlife, or people who want nothing more than to lie on a sandy beach and soak up the rays (there is NO beach!!), but is for someone who likes a bit of real culture, someone who goes on holiday to see other things, see new things, do new things. And with Cadenabbia, you can do this, and the fact there is no beach to laze on, means you are more inclined to do things, like going to St Moritz Skiing, or going on guided tours in Milan and Venice.
Cadenabbia is perfect for older people, or couples who don't crave nightlife and beaches. You won't find a club in Cadenabbia I'm afraid, a few bars with some lively music, and your hotel bar, but no hardcore dance and Halo type clubs. So please bare this in mind!!!!!!
Its an amazing place to visit, and I would most definitely recommend it to everybody!
Summary: for people who want to relax and have stories to tell when they get home!

- 26/03/09 I agree with Cat19 - perhaps it would be better to request a cateogry for Cadenabbia itself |

- 26/03/09 Sounds like it might be nice, but I don't really have a feel for the place. I am not bothered about what hotel you stayed in as I might use a different one. You mention that there are nice excursions but haven't told me anything about them, you have told me what I won't find but not too much about what I will find or what you liked about Lake Como itself. |
