Advantages: pretty, lovely people, nice views and scenery
Disadvantages: very expensive
I was actually quite surprised when we pulled into the train station at Como. I don't really know what I was expecting, but the station was on a hill so as you came out you got a view of the town. The sun hit me and the taxi driver came over and took my bags and made me feel very important. Accommodation was a bit of an issue because it was so expensive. We managed to find a double room for about £40 a night, but you couldn't swing a cat in it and the bed was so low you might as well have slept on the floor. I won't tell you what it's called for fear of getting sued. The other thing that although had it's good points was also another major problem. The area probably has more chapels and churches that it did people and boy, did they like to ring those bells! They started at about 7.00 and rung every hour on the hour and completely put a halt to your lie in! The lake itself was lovely (although a bit stinky around the edge in the summer) and the boat trips were how I spent most of my time. Bellagio was lovely and quaint with little pink cottages etc but only really suitable for a day trip for the younger generation as there is not a lot to do. There are shops and restaurants, but very very expensive. You are looking at about £12 for a couple of beers and ice creams. Tremmagio is a bit rubbish, just a main road and a couple of ice cream parlours, but most of the others are lovely. You can get these tickets that allow you to get on and off where you like, but I wouldn't recommend this. There are too many places and you have to be careful you don't miss your last boat home as some of them stop running at about 17.00. What I would do is pick a couple of places and spend a bit more time in each otherwise you are just too rushed. The hydrofoil is worth the extra money if you can as it is a lot quicker - about half the time at least. Although if you want a more leisurely journey then take the boat as it is love
ly. Como has quite a good nightlife if you are just after a meal and a few drinks, although we did end up at McDonalds a couple of nights! I was actually surprised how many young people there were there - and they were all georgous so make sure you take your glad rags so you don't feel too conspicuous! My last point would be to make sure you don't order pasta for a starter unless you want to explode! I thought they would bring a really small portion - but they don't! They bring a massive plate full which means you then can't eat your pizza. It was lovely and I would definately recommend it whatever the age group, but do make sure you take plenty of money - you are going to need it!

ermintrude - 07/12/00 I would have rated this VU, but I think you should reveal the name of the hotel :) After all, dooyoo is about opinions and helping people make better decisions, and you would definitely be helping them out by telling them where to avoid! I don't think you'd get sued for it - it's just an opinion after all.
Let me know if you change it, I'll come back and re-rate :) |
