They say that few things in life are as beautiful as in a touched-up Photograph. For some places, you don't get the chance to see the photograph to find out. Ranco, on the East side of Lake Maggiore, is one of these. The Lago Maggiore or Verbano as called by locals is located some 50 km northwest of Milan or just 20 from Malpensa International airport. Tis lake lays on area of glacial era origin. The north tip of the lake is belong to Switzerland while the west shore is in Piedmont region and the est in Lombardy region. Stressa has perhaps seen better times. There is an air of fadeed gentility about the place. On the plus side it has a magnificent location on Lake Como opposite the Bordescean Islands Isola Bella, Isola Madre). On the minus side the main road runs along the lakeside and this can be an inconvenience. There is adequate shopping with a supermarket at the back of the main square for essentials and some very upmarket shops for those little luxuries. Stressa is best as a base rather than a resort. The islands are easily reached by boat (but go early before the hordes of day trippers) and there are smaller lakes and beautiful gardens nearby to visit. It is also possible to ...
