Lake Taupo ... deepest point of 186 metres and a surface area of 616 square kilometres. The largest lake by surface area in the country, it is drained by the Waikato River, while its main tributaries are the Waitahanui River, the Tongariro River, and the Taupo-Tauranga River. It is noted for stocks of short-finned eel and trout, the former a traditional delicacy and the latter a tourist attraction.

Lake Taupo is located in the centre of north island. It is a giant crator lake which was formed a few thousand years ago. It is easily accessible by bus (Intercity) and by car. If your an adrenaline seeker and can't aford the high prices of Queenstown, Taupo is the place to go.
