The snowcat tour takes you to the centre of the glacier, which offers a superb view over the island, and it is possible to see mountains several hundred kilometres away on a good day. While the tour was expensive, it was great fun, and the view from the glacier was incredible. Superb snowball fights can be had on the glacier, and its size is truly awe-inspiring. ... more |

Langjokull is the second largest glacier in Iceland, and in fact, the second largest glacier outside the Arctic Circle. It's only about 100 kilometres drive from Reykjavik, the country's capital – though be warned that the drive is not an easy one. There are two routes to get there from Reykjavik. One involves about 30 kilometres of "F"-quality mountain roads, and goes through Thingvellir before heading through the rugged Kaldidalur highland region on the F35. The other is a longer route (about 150km), spending longer on route 1, before heading inland onto route 518, and finally heading onto route F550 for the last five kilometres or so. ...
