Advantages: More to do than other islands, good transport links to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore

Disadvantages: The beaches are better in Redang, as a total package no real disadvantages

I spent 6 nights in Langkawi in September 2009 and have also visited teh Malaysian islands of Tioman and Redang. Langkawi is an island belonging to Malaysia also known as the Jewel of Keddah and is geographically just south of Thailand.

It has its own small airport and has great transport links to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur airports with budget airlines Air Asia and Fireflyz, this makes Langkawi a much easier island to access than Tioman and Redang which can only be reached by boat or on a Berjaya Resort Airplane (in the case of Redang there is then no road to connect you to any other resort, so unless you stay at Berjaya you have to reach Redang by boat).

The climate is hot all year round, although peak season is UK winter time, it still felt like summer in the middle of September and was quite scary to imagine that it would be a lot hotter later in the year. The days before I arrived Langkawi had flooded and local people needed to be evacuated but my 6 days there saw about 4 and a half of sunshine and 1 day of very heavy rain.

The beaches are wonderful but dont be fooled if you want the bluest waters in Malaysia it is not to be found here and even less so on the famous Tioman island. If you want the bluest beaches and whitest sand then head to the Perhentian Islands off the other side of the Malaysian Peninsula. That said the beaches were still great with warm sea water all year round.

What Langkawi has going for it that other Malaysian islands do not is that it is more developed and as such there are things to do and see, such as; buffalo parks, crocodile parks, underwaterworld, shopping. In contrast I have visited Tioman which is virtually all jungle and Redang Island which doesnt have roads but an amazing beach which literally is the road. Thus in Langkawi there is simply more to do. And the other big plus is that you can visit Langkawi all year round and have tropical temperature while other islands have to close during the monsoon season (October-March/April).

Summary: Would definately go back
