Advantages: Exclusive, Luxury, Individually catered for
Disadvantages: Isolated, Cost, Out of season rain
If you enjoy long haul tropical holidays it really might be worth saving hard for this one. The Datai Hotel, Langkawi, Malaysia. Details available on the internet through any good search engine. The weather in our winter is hot but beware that you may catch heavy rains up until December. Luxury is the Datai's middle name. They look after you with traditional Malaysian hospitality plus a bit more. This is not a resort for those who want night life or action. It is quiet, relaxing and emphasises wildlife and fine cuisine (The catering manager takes the quality of his food personnally down to the smallest detail and the hotel has qualified guides to show you the best of the wildlife.). You do pay for it, heavily, (about £40+ each for dinner)but the quality and ambience is superb. If you really want to splash out they will provide dinner for two in the setting of your choice.(restaurants include continental, Thai and buffet) There are no other restaurants close to the hotel that you could eat out at. There is a variety of accomodation available. We originally booked a jungle villa, but were upgraded to a corner suite. The villa's may be overated for their price. Located on the rainforest floor they are dark and the terraces damp. A room might be a better option if you cannot afford a suite. The suite's locate you on the tree canopy level and my meagre literary capabitiies do not come close to describing it's variety and exclusivity. Hornbill, fairy blue birds, squirrel, all manner of threatened tropical flora and fauna on your doorstep. The hotel does not discourage children but there aren't many, if any, there. The two pools cater for those who want a view of the sea or the surroundings of the rainforest. The beach is ok, clean white sand and good facilities. Watch out for microscopic jelly fish in the sea. Laze your days away watching crabs whilst you enjoy the shade of trees. Facilities include free water sports, from sailing to sn
orkelling. No motorised crafts allowed so you will not be irritated by jetski's! There is far more to the Datai than I have mentioned (the cocktails!). However, I have to bring the reader's attention to the 'Health Club'. Again, nothing here is cheap, but you will definately get your money's worth in a setting that is quite breathtaking. The massage rooms open out into the forest. The sounds and aromas will remain with you long after your holiday is over, along with other memories of a truly special holiday. If you do feel like leaving the hotel there is plenty of sightseeing to keep you occupied on the island. (book a local car yourself or car hire - much cheaper than hotel cars) I have travelled extensively in my lifetime, staying at some of the worlds most exclusive resorts. This has to be the best. Get saving! (I booked on the internet through a reputable company and saved £400 pp pw on high street prices)
