I first started visiting this area of France when I was in my early thirties and going through that very pretentious stage of thinking I was a wine buff and could recognise all the wines from the South West region. I was never one for talking about the bouquets and aromas of wine but I did used to think I was pretty accurate at guessing wines from the south west region of France. Older and wiser as (Ian Botham would say) I drink anything now and in fact I am not really sure if I am so mad about wine - cheap or expensive. We've stayed in the Languedoc on a number of occasions and have wonderful memories of each and every time. The area is teeming with history and natural beauty. There are things to do and see within reach of every part. From Carcassonne, a fairytale medieval town, through to The Cirque de Navacelles, a hole in the ground like you wouldn't believe....The sun shines seemingly endlessly and the people are friendly and helpful. When you tell people that "The French" are friendly they generally don't believe you, their only previous experience of them being visits to Calais, Paris and the North. We have had two holidays in the lovely Languedoc region, and are going again for 2 weeks this September, so we obviously think it is wonderful! It is a very beautiful area. The first time we went we went to Agde, a lovely area round from the Carmague and the Riviera. The Camargue is near enough to visit, and this is a wonderful area, with its wild horses, and bulls, and flamingos. Last year we went to Argeles, near Perpignan and the Spanish borders, and this was an even more beautiful area. There is so much to see round there. The Pyrenees are near enough to visit, and are a must - especially the ride on the little yellow train up into the mountains. Andorra ... Read the complete review
