Lanzarote is a dream island to us. We have visited the isalnd and the resort of Costa Teguise four times and are about to depart on our holiday for our fifth time. The island is not beautiful in the manner we are all accustomed to. It is covered in lava rock which is from the eruption of Timanfaya about 150 years ago. You can visit the volcan with an organised trip or you can hire a care very cheaply and take your self there. It is well worth the visit. The island is only small and you can tour the island in one day. Arreciffe is the capital and this is also where the airport is. Nearly all the people who live in Lanzarote live in the capital. Lanzarote is not a member of the EU and it is therefore cheap to buy your electrical goods, cigarettes and alcohol. Food is very cheap to buy , a family of four can eat out easily for approximately twenty pounds and that will buy you a three course meal and drinks. One thing you have to get used to is the "siesta" where shops close for the afternoon and open again at teatime until about nine o clock. Peridot is found on Lanzarote but the name used there is Olivine. You will find peridot in one form or another in every shop you visit. The island has beautiful golden beaches and the people who windsurf practice on Las Cucharas beach in costa Teguise. There is always a breeze or a bit stronger blowing across from the sahara desert. You have to be very careful as you can stil be sunburnt badly even though it is cooler or even cloudy. All the buildings are built now as there is a rule on the island that everything is built by the end of the year 2000 and nothing more can be built for twenty five years. Apartments are three storeys high and hotels no more than nine storeys high. You will not find high rise buildings in the resort areas. The isalnd is made up completely of lava and the only place where you will find any greenery is at the golf course w
hich is situated outside of Costa Teguise. In the village of Teguise there is a market held every sunday. Teguise used to be the capital of the island but now Arreciffe is the capital. Every friday evening in Costa Teguise there is a craft market where you can buy goods cheaply. There is always plenty of leather goods along with different hair clips , filigree jewellry and much more.It is well worth a visit. Touring the island of Lanzarote can be done in a day. Car hire is cheap and fuel is only about 35 pence a litre. There are lots of places to visit and it is easy to travel to them by car. I love visiting the island and could sit here and write pages more about it. It is ideal for families and if you like nightlife Puerto del Carmen is the ideal resort . It has night clubs and a three mile stretch of bars, restaurants and shops. Playa Blanca has a ferry terminal for the ferry to Fuerteventurs. The cruise liners often can be see out of the bay and launches fetch passengers into Playa Blanca. Playa Blanca is a quiet place with the best hotel on the island situated there. This hotel is The Lanzarote Princess hotel. This is the hotel which sets the standard for all accomodation on the island. I can tell you that it is well worth a trip to visit the island of Lanzarote with its volcanoes and beautiful beaches.

- 09/06/01 Iam going there in the morning, it is my first visit. I'm not sure about the windy weather though, my husband cycles and is worried that he will get blown off. |
