Advantages: Vibrant, diverse, mind-blowing
Disadvantages: depends entirely on your opinion
It is a strange experience taking a vacation to a town with the purpose of spendin the whole week in hotels.
I first visited Vegas as an 18 year old, and again this year (2008) aged 22, with warnings from some people that Vegas was a seedy place that was not suitable for a young man. Now having been twice I can see exactly what these warnings were based on, it probably isn't the place for a young man to dwell, but my god it is just so much fun!
Flying in to Vegas is a little odd. Sat on the wrong side of the plane, I saw literally nothing but desert as we descended and eventually landed. Flying in on my own from New York to meet friends I was starting to wonder if what I'd seen on TV was a huge exxageration, until I got off the plane, and arrived in an airport laiden with slot machines, rows upon rows of them.
I barely had time to get my bearings the night of my arrival before I was at a comedy show in the MGM grand, overwhelmed my the size and spectacle of the city of sin.
The time I have spent in the city is unsurprisingly a bit of a blur, with a few beverages mixed with a non-stop attitude found everywhere amongst the lights. Personally not being much of a gambler I enjoyed a dabble, but preferred to marvel at the high flyers waging thousands on a single spin or roll of a dice. The hotels in Vegas are mind-blowing, with zoos, ancient pyramids, rollercoasters, gondolas and a huge variety of other attractions in the most outrageous buildings you will ever see.
A highlight for me was the stratosphere tower, and the thrill rides at the top. The ride that seems to fire you off the top of the 1000+ft building is the scariest I have ever experienced, and I have been on my share of rides. The whole city is built around extremes, extremely rich people, extremely beautiful women, an extremely vibrant atmosphere 24 hours a day, and an extremely large amount of ways to misbehave yourself, but it is definately possible to visit as an interested tourist to enjoy the sights rather than as a gambling hustler or someone intending to marry someone quickly.
With the Hoover Dam and world-famous Grand Canyon no more than a coach trip away there are more reasons to visit than the flashing lights. I strongly reccomend everyone should visit Las Vegas at least once, it is truly unique, completely individual, and offers the experience of a lifetime whatever you are looking for in a trip to Nevada
Summary: Must be seen at least once
