Advantages: A good base

Disadvantages: Bright lights, big deal

Las Vegas is a brilliant place - just as long as you don't spend any time in it. Some of the most glorious sights in the American West are quite conviniently close to the desert 'Oasis' - the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Lake Powell, even stuff like Monument Valley are do-able from there. The desert attractions in Nevade and Arizona are among the most amazing things you can see in North America, and as long as you don't mind driving, Las Vegas is a good developed base with who knows how many hotel beds, places to eat and gas stations. Also, because the main business of the town isn't so much the hotels and the food as the GAMBLING, the prices tend to be pretty good. You can get really really cheap food as an incentive to step through the doors of some of the casinos, and if you're willing to dodge the gambling, you'll do well.

As for the casinos, the town itself? Well, to be honest, it's a neon blur. I went to casinos to take advantage of cheap food deals, and gambled some complementary chips somebody gave me. I didn't spend a dime of my own money, and was never tempted to. I guess if you like your entertainment with bells and whistles and flashing lights, and gaudy is good, well, go for it. Lose some money. Everyone else does.
