Advantages: En Route to Austria

I stopped in Lille last year on the way to Austria and stayed at a good hotel in the center of Lille for one night and one day going, and the same on return.
Daytime wasn't too bad, could look around and what I saw was ok considering that I didn't know Lille. Looking at the architecture and just generally browsing around was interesting.
I thought the people were not too friendly though outside, in fact going out after 9 pm was pretty much scary stuff as there were em! unsavoury characters in shop doorways and groups walking around who were not shall I say 'shopping'.
None of the party felt too safe and a quick return to the hotel put us all at ease.
It was a very hot night and we slept with the windows wide (BIG MISTAKE) because the next day I was covered with mosquito bites, and I mean covered.
I was not alone in this as others in the party were suffering too.
I had no idea that these were rife in Northern France, UGH.
All in all I wasn't very keen on the place and would have moved on earlier but we were on a coach holiday so I wasn't in control.
The hotel and staff at the hotel were superb throughout.
