[Background: I have very fond memories of a school holiday to Lucerne in Switzerland in 1987. For anyone who has never considered this area of the world as a holiday destination, I thought that I would recount a few of my memories of the destination]

If like me, you aren't a sun seeker, and prefer to take your holidays somewhere with a more temperate climate, then Switzerland may well be the destination for you.

I went to Switzerland on a school trip many years ago, in 1987, and stayed at the small resort of Weggis, not far from Lake Lucerne - memorable (to me anyway) for having a large oversized chess board in the centre of the village.

Although this trip was thirteen years ago now, I still have fond and enduring memories of this country and its impressive landscape of lakes and mountains.

Mount Pilatus is a short cable car ride away from the picturesque village of Weggis, and afforded fantastic views over the lake from its summit.

Lucerne itself is only a short coach trip or boat ride away, and I can particularly recommend the boat ride, which is a great way to spend a couple hours, admiring the scenery. When you arrive there, Lucerne is a small bustling city with a variety of shops and also many historic buildings.

If you are visiting this area, it may be as well to brush up on your German, as most of the inhabitants are German speakers (rather than French). However, although you should never rely on the fact, most of the locals do speak English very well.

All in all, if you want a change from the sun, sand and sea of a beach holiday, and you prefer to avoid the hustle and bustle of a city break, then you can easily achieve this by staying in one of the many settlements on the banks of Lake Lucerne.

This area of Switzerland allows holidaymakers to take a more sedate break and to enjoy some real rest and relaxation in pleasant surroundings.

So, don't be put of
f by stereotypical images of this country and go and see it for yourself.
