Luxor ... Al Uqsur governorate, population approximately 150,000. As the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes, Luxor has frequently been characterised as the "world's greatest open air museum", the ruins of the temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor standing within the modern city. Immediately opposite, across the Nile River, lie the monuments, temples and tombs on the West Bank Necropolis, which include the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. Thousands of international tourists arrive each year to visit these monuments, their presence forming a large part of the economic basis for the modern city. As a result, Luxor represents an excellent base for touring Upper Egypt, and is a popular holiday destination, both in its own right and as a starting or finishing point for Nile cruises.

Newest Review: ... Both of the Valleys were interesting and a little bit creepy actually! The Luxor Museum was definately something worth visiting and only about a ten minute walk from our hotel. I would say it took us about an 2 hours to look thoroughly around the Luxor Museum. The Mummy Museum was totally not worth visiting and probably took us 20 minutes and was not as interesting. Luxor is a brilliant place to relax and to get the chance to see ancient archieology and also to learn a thing or two! If you have always wanted to go to Egypt, then go to Luxor. There is alot to do and alot to learn. I went in Nov 07 and had a brilliant time. We stayed in a 5 star hotel for 2 weeks, which was situated right on the River Nile! We could dip our feet in the River Nile without leaving our hotel! How amazing. Attractions In Luxor The Valley of the Kings and The Valley of the Queens were definately the highlights of the trip. This is where explorers found all the tombs of the ancient kings and queens of Egypt. Each tomb ...  Read the complete review

Being in Luxor is like walking into a vast museum which just happens to be situated in an oven. It is situated on the banks of the River Nile in Central Egypt. Because of the rich agriculture provided by the annual flooding of the Nile there has been civilisation here for the last 4,000 years. Every age has left it's mark, from the Ancient Egyptian tombs and temples, the roman carvings and artefacts, the mediaeval mosque sites, up to the modern day tourist hotels. It's all there side by side and absolutely stunning in it's mixtures and history. Modern Luxor consists of three cities, Luxor, Karnak on the East bank and Thebes on the West Bank. For the year 2000 we decided to take a holiday at a more exotic location so after looking at all the different places we decided on a weeks holiday to Luxor in Egypt. Heres what we thought: Flights -------- From Manchester, only 5 hours with Britannia airlines. Meals on board and a pleasant flight. Climate --------- It was the beginning of July and very very warm, actually 45-50 degrees centigrade but because it was a dry heat, it actually felt only like about 25-30 degrees centigrade. Be warned to use good high factor sun cream as the sun is alot stronger down there. Hotel ------- We stayed in a 3* hotel ...  Read the complete review

After 28 years my husband and I decided to revisit Egypt, not that we expected the millennia-old monuments to look any different, but the first visit had impressed us so much that we thought we´d enjoy a second. On 20th December Egypt Air took us from Frankfurt/Main directly to Luxor in Upper Egypt where we landed at 1 am the following morning due to a delay at departure, when we finally hit the hay it was 2 am! The view from the balcony of our hotel room some hours later rewarded us for the trouble: after winter-grey Germany eye-hurting, bright sunshine, palm trees on the bank of the Nile, cruisers and feluccas - Egyptian sailing-boats - on the glittering ...  Read the complete review
