Lyon has long suffered being the second largest city in France, continuously having to compete with the illustrious Paris. Be warned, first impressions of Lyon are not to be trusted - the abundance of factoriea, (the chemical corridor), the long, snaking motorways full of traffic and the overbearing greyness of the buildings - give yourself a chance to discover the real heart of this city. The 'Old Town' is in the centre of the city, and here you can discover winding, narrow streets leading you to a collection of splendid Rennaisance buildings - long since demolished in most other parts of France. If you ever make a visit to the 3rd-largest city in France: Lyon, and need a place to stay, I would highly recommend this YHA Youth Hostel in the heart of Lyon. Perched on the top of Montee Ju Chemin Neuf, this hostel is housed in a recently restored LISTED villa, and most importantly, the view of Lyon from from its balcony is absolutely breath-taking - esp at night! It has to be the best hotel/hostel view I've had during all my tour trips. We stayed in a 10-bed room (if I remember it correctly...and all the rooms are locked, however ours wasn't really a typical room) but we had it all to ourselves (7 of us) and there was a balcony right outside ...
