Advantages: Cheap with fantastic view from up the hill!
Disadvantages: Uphill climb could be tiring, but a bit of exercise wouldn't hurt! :?
If you ever make a visit to the 3rd-largest city in France: Lyon, and need a place to stay, I would highly recommend this YHA Youth Hostel in the heart of Lyon. Perched on the top of Montee Ju Chemin Neuf, this hostel is housed in a recently restored LISTED villa, and most importantly, the view of Lyon from from its balcony is absolutely breath-taking - esp at night! It has to be the best hotel/hostel view I've had during all my tour trips. We stayed in a 10-bed room (if I remember it correctly...and all the rooms are locked, however ours wasn't really a typical room) but we had it all to ourselves (7 of us) and there was a balcony right outside our room facing the magnificent view and refreshing breeze of Lyon. The rate is a mere 71FF per night per bed (for members; non-members 90F) and breakfast is included. If you are lucky you might get a double room - they have 2 double rooms at this same rate but you can't book in advance for those. Breakfast is typical of a youth hostel - French bread, butter, jam and cornflakes. I would say that the bed and breakfast is what you would expect from a youth hostel, but the view! There is a kitchen if you need to cook - though it is locked at certain times - after 10pm I think. Next to the dining hall, there is an open-air lounge area normally filled with backpackers socialising with the awesome view of Lyon in the backdrop. You can keep your luggage here for free temporarily on the day you check out, though bear in mind they do not lock the storage room and it is kept at your own risk. We used this service without experiencing any problem. A warning for those with heavy luggage though, as this villa hostel is right at the top of a hill, it is quite a long hike up (there is a mini waterfall halfway which lits up quite nicely at night though) but you can take a furnicular or some form of transport to the other side of the hill first. However, once you are up there I think you will ag
ree that the stunning view is more than worth it. There are some attractions on this hill itself including Fourvière, on which the Romans built their capital of Gaul. From this hill you can walk down past some garden to old Lyon (or Vieux Lyon -where there are more restaurants per square meter than anywhere else on earth) while Modern Lyon lies east of Rhône. Finally, you can book your accommodation either by phone or though e-mail, and you might find the following contact details useful : Auberge de Jeunesse de Lyon Auberge de Jeunesse du vieux Lyon 41-45, Montée du Chemin Neuf 69005 Lyon Phone: +33 (0)4 78 15 05 50 Fax: +33 (0) 4 78 15 05 51 email: lyon@fuaj.org
