The main town is basically a strip of Mainly fudge shops, which make fresh and very tastey fudge, and tacky sourvenir shops and a few bars. It is slightly hectic in the summer but isn't that busy. The Grand hotel has the pargest balcony in the world and is quiet a pleasant place to visit to see the views and architecture. I've been to Mackinac Island 6 times in my capacity as a camp councellor in Northern Michigan and it does become very repetitive. However on my last visit I found a side to the island that I had never seen before. The island has four main attractions 1. The main town which contains Fudge and Sourvenir shops 2. Northern Michigan is one of the most beautiful places in America. Sadly it is also home to one of the most beastly - Mackinac Island! Mackinac Island is a tourist honeypot between the Upper and Lower Penninsula of the State. No motor vehicles are permitted on the island and tourists arrive by boat from Mackinaw City and St Ignace. Expect to pay about £15 for the round trip. There is no camping on the island and most people come and go in one day although you can stay overnight at a hotel or B&B.
